The City of Greer Police and Courts Complex was designed as urban infill to house several municipal offices, scattered in different buildings across the city, under one roof. This facility was part of a larger plan for several downtown improvements, including a new city hall and urban park.
The design team was charged with creating a structure that had a civic presence, respected the urban context and history of the town, but also embodied the city’s future and growth. Because of the building’s small urban site, a major dilemma was tying the new building to the existing Police Department, maintaining open circulation to the Fire Department next door, and masking unsightly neighboring buildings.
