Description:

Sunken Living Room, Screen Porch, Deck & Pool

The owners desired a mid-century modern aesthetic.  They also wanted privacy from the street and neighbors.  The resulting design maintains a strong axial relationship with the dock beyond, creates living spaces that bleed into outdoor rooms, and takes advantage of the marsh views.

Originally, the house was designed to sit on an interior site, with most of the architectural focus on a side courtyard.  With a new waterfront lot, the entire house had to be redesigned and elevated.  To create a similar low, horizontal aesthetic, the house uses several visual "tricks" to disguise its true height.  These items include porches that are lower than the house's finish floor and a built in planter to visually break the height of the house.
